FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES: Your role as a citizen


Fundamental Duties are the basic moral and civic responsibilities that every citizen of India is expected to follow. These duties remind citizens to respect the nation, its values, and work towards its unity and development. Fundamental duties are mentioned in Article 51A of the Indian Constitution and were added by the 42nd Amendment Act in 1976.
Fundamental Duties of India

11 | (Added by 86th Amendment, 2002): To provide opportunities for education to children between 6 and 14 years of age, and ensure they attend school. |
Features of Fundamental duties:
- Fundamental duties in India were added by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976.
- They are mentioned in Article 51A, Part IV-A of the Constitution.
- Fundamental duties are only applicable to Indian citizens.
- There are 11 fundamental duties (10 original, 11th added by the 86th Amendment in 2002).
- Fundamental duties are not legally enforceable by courts unless a specific law is made to implement them.
- They serve as moral and civic obligations, not legal rights.
- They aim to promote unity, patriotism, and responsibility among the Indian citizens.
- They help balance Fundamental Rights with responsibilities.
