Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of Indian Air force landed safely back on planet Earth after completing 18 days in space on an Axiom Mission 4 ( AX-4 ) on the International Space Station. The SpaceX Dragon capsule landed off San Diego on July 9, 2025 after making 320 orbits on Earth and performing more than 60 experiments. Shukla as a pilot is the historical moment of Gaganyaan mission preparation in India because he is the first Indian commercial astronaut to go to the ISS. The mission was done in conjunction with Axiom Space, SpaceX, ISRO and global partners. His retrieval and subsequent rehabilitation and post flight monitoring by ISRO is an indication of the competence of spacefaring in India.

Context

  • India is engaged in Ax-4 as a strategic international cooperation undertaking before India undertakes its maiden manned spaceflight, Gaganyaan.
  • This experience that was given by Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla provided invaluable, real-time experience and readiness in human space flight activities.
