SMS Medical College Jaipur achieves world’s first polymer mitral valve transplant, a breakthrough in cardiac surgery

SMS Medical College, Jaipur has achieved a global milestone by performing the world’s first polymer mitral valve transplant. Surgery was performed on a 38-year-old patient suffering from rheumatic heart disease. The new polymer valve is specially effective for young patients with rheumatic heart disease. Research on this valve was carried out at SMS Medical College itself and results were published in the prestigious Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). Principal & Controller of SMS Medical College Dr. Deepak Maheshwari called it a revolutionary achievement in heart valve replacement. In current use, Mechanical valves require lifelong blood thinners whereas Tissue valves degenerate over time.

The surgical team was led by Dr. Anil Sharma, HOD, Cardiac Surgery, along with Dr. Mohit Sharma, Dr. Sunil Dixit, Dr. Anjum, and Dr. Reema.
