Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Objective of PMUY

The main objective of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is to create LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connections to women living in poor families in the rural and deprived regions. This project aims at substituting the so-called traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal and cow-dung cakes, with clean and safe cooking fuel to enhance health and life quality of women and children.

Key Features of PMUY

  • Target Group: The poor women without LPG connection.
  • Financial Assistance: The scheme offers financial assistance of 1600 (142 kg cylinder) or 1150 (5 kg cylinder).

Free Benefits:

  • LPG refill and stove (hot plate) are free.
  • Free connection of qualified beneficiaries.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Principal Beneficiary: An adult woman, who is a member of a poor family.
  • Household Requirement: The household should not have some LPG connection.

Categories for Eligibility:

  • Homes registered under SECC 2011.
  • SC/ST households.
  • Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).
  • Forest inhabitants, Most Backward Classes (MBC), Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes.
  • The inhabitants of river islands (with the supporting documents).
  • In case the above categories are not applicable, a 14-point declaration may be filed.
  • Exclusion: The male members of the household are ineligible.

  • Health Benefits: Reduces exposure to indoor air pollution by conventional fuels.
  • Economic Benefits: Gives women access to a more efficient fuel to cook, which is saving time and labor.
  • Environmental benefits: minimizes deforestation and air pollution from burning wood and other traditional fuels.

Recent Developments

  • Certainly, the consumption of petroleum products has also increased significantly in areas such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands and this is largely because of the success of the PMUY scheme.
